I totally feel your pain. There can be nothing more frustrating than trying to figure out how to talk to someone you really like.
It seems to me, though, that you have an 'in.' First of all, you guys see each other at church, so you aren't a total stranger coming up to him. There've been all these psychology experiments done on people - results have said that people start feeling friendly towards strangers they see a lot.
That aside, you talk to his friend a lot? That's perfect!
The next time his friend is with your crush, go up and start talking to his friend. This is an easy way to smile at your crush, or get a conversation going between the three of you. That's easier and more natural than just approaching a cute guy you've never really talked to before.
It'll show your crush that his friend obviously thinks you're all right, and if the conversation goes well you can approach your crush in future...or maybe he'll approach you!
