Ask Alison.

Why am I still bleeding?
Hey Alison, I have a question.

My boyfriend and I have been seeing each other for the past 5 months and he's fingered me. We started that about 3 months ago and did this at least once a week since then.

Everytime we do this, I bleed, sometimes a lot, sometimes, not that much. What could this be signaling and do you have any advice for me? Thank you

Well, a little bleeding is normal the first few times you are fingered. It really should not still be happening.

It could be because your boyfriend's nails are slightly long or have sharp edges and they are catching in your vaginal skin. This can be solved by him regularly keeping his nails groomed, and never trimming them just before fingering you - freshly trimmed nails often have rough edges.

If you do have any tiny tears, repeated fingering could be not allowing them a chance to heal.

Other things: are you lubricated? If you aren't feeling particularly excited, or if you're the type of person that doesn't get very lubricated, this can also tug or irritate your sensitive skin.

However, even if one of these is the cause, blood every single time isn't usual. Your safest bet is to see your doctor - and to be completely honest. If you feel nervous (which is normal), ask him or her about their policy on confidentiality before you tell them your problem.

A gyno might be best, as they will be able to examine you, assess any problem, and offer you a solution. While this may be an uncomfortable topic to discuss with a stranger, any pain or significant bleeding means you should be seeking medical assistance as soon as possible.

Chances are things are fine, but only a doctor can give you the all clear.
